Sam, the city explorer
AN EDUCATIONAL GAME
Sam, the city explorer is an educational game that aims to raise environmental awareness among primary school children.
This was done under the module CS900: Communication Strategies for social change.
It was the winning entry of the cohort, and also adopted as a prototype in Ahmad Ibrahim Primary School.
CRAFTING A RELATABLE ARCHETYPE
Children stories on the environment are often told using the point of view of animals, the earth, or a tree-hugging indigenous living in the rainforest.
Truth is, the city-dwelling in Singapore find it hard to relate.
Meet Sam – a city boy who travels to major cities of the world.
He has one mission: to stop energy guzzling, waste wasting, and to get people to use those recyclable grocery bags.
COMBINING DIGITAL STORYTELLING WITH REAL-LIFE PLAY
An interactive iPad game was not enough, the kids need to walk the talk.
The story was combined with an actual learning journey hat had real-life exercises and games to practice behaviours.
Visual cues placed at various touch-points
At the end of the learning journey, students will pledge to be environmental advocates.
